The first " posto de gasolina" of South America was opened in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil, in 1920. Since 2008 the Bertha Benz Memorial Route commemorates this event. Shortly thereafter other pharmacies sold gasoline as a side business. The first known filling station was the city pharmacy in Wiesloch, Germany, where Bertha Benz refilled the tank of the first automobile on its maiden trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim back in 1888. History The world's first "filling station", the City Pharmacy in Wiesloch, Germany In Japanese, a commonly used term is gasoline stand although the abbreviation SS (for service station) is also used. In India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, it is called a " petrol pump" or a " petrol bunk". Similarly, in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, the term " service station" describes any petrol station Australians also call it a " servo". In the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa " garage" and " forecourt" is still commonly used. In the rest of the English-speaking world the fuel is known as "petrol", and the term " petrol station" or " petrol pump" is used. In some regions of Canada, the term " gas bar" (or "gasbar") is used. In North America the fuel is known as "gasoline" or "gas" for short, and " gas station" and " service station" are used in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. ![]() Conversely, some chain stores, such as supermarkets, discount stores, warehouse clubs, or traditional convenience stores, have provided fuel pumps on the premises. Some also sell propane or butane and have added shops to their primary business. Many filling stations provide convenience stores, which may sell confections, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, lottery tickets, soft drinks, snacks, coffee, newspapers, magazines, and, in some cases, a small selection of grocery items, such as milk. Besides gasoline pumps, one other significant device which is also found in filling stations and can refuel certain (compressed-air) vehicles is an air compressor, although generally these are just used to inflate car tires. Gasoline pumps are used to pump gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas, CGH2, HCNG, LPG, liquid hydrogen, kerosene, alcohol fuel (like methanol, ethanol, butanol, and propanol), biofuels (like straight vegetable oil and biodiesel), or other types of fuel into the tanks within vehicles and calculate the financial cost of the fuel transferred to the vehicle. The most common fuels sold in the 2010s were gasoline (or petrol) and diesel fuel. But now I work from home, in a city where I can walk most places. I think it might be my closeness to the train system, that I was a commuter, that drew me to creating calm in Mini Metro. I don’t think there’s a right way to play Mini Motorways or any game like even, even if there is a way to technically win, but there is a very real meditative quality to connecting the game’s roads in a way that just works - it’s how I enjoyed Mini Metro, after all, which I played when I commuted an hour each way on the train. I’ve spent the last few days playing Mini Motorways, cackling quietly to myself, as I draw roads in circles to create monstrous cities that will never work.Īfter all, Mini Motorways isn’t built for the nonsense of rotaries - maybe one day! - but neither am I, either.Įventually, I think I’ll get sick of trying to make the rotaries work in Mini Motorways and will opt to play more traditionally, embracing more “zen” gameplay, moving from chaos to calm. Despite not working as I’d hoped, I still create them all over the city. And so my city’s drivers drive the wrong way in the rotaries without any care, getting stuck in major traffic jams caused by my own careful and chaotic planning. I can create something that looks like a rotary, but there’s no way to tell the drivers they can only go in one direction. The unfortunate part, though, is that developer Dinosaur Polo Club doesn’t support this feature. So naturally, I am implementing them in all of my Mini Motorways cities. They don’t work here because no one really knows how to use them correctly. They’re terrifying and I’ve never truly understood the logic behind them, but that may just be a product of driver confusion. A rotary, sometimes called a traffic circle or a roundabout depending on where you’re from, is an intersection wherein traffic flows around a center island, with roads connecting as “exits.” Sometimes there are stop signs, lane lines, or stoplights (technically, the more organized ones are called roundabouts, but it’s complex and I won’t get into it here), but a lot of them feel like free-for-alls - you just go, and you don’t stop. Massachusetts, apparently, has more rotaries than any other state in the United States, according to the Boston Globe. I don’t drive often, but when I do, I find myself thinking the same thing I’m imagining my Mini Motorway drivers are: Who designed this thing? None of the cities available in Mini Motorways are Boston, but I’m putting a little Boston stamp on all of them. I think this habit is because I live in Massachusetts, a state with notoriously bad drivers and absurdly designed roads. My cities are averaging around 400 to 500 cars on the road before everything goes to chaos, which feels pretty good considering I’m prone to creating chaotic scenarios. If too many cars build up on the city’s streets, the city will grind to a halt and the game will end. With these resources, you’re free to build the city however you choose, but it’s got to keep running. Road tiles refresh seven days - in-game time - plus an extra, sometimes a motorway, other times a bridge or stoplight. You’re given a limited number of resources to build with road tiles, bridges, motorways, and stoplights are all intermittently available. City planning, first, starts slow, with a house or two and a single car park. Unfortunately for the imaginary citizens of my Mini Motorways cities (Los Angeles, Beijing, Tokyo, Dar es Salaam, Moscow, and Munch), I’m all they’ve got. I’m so sorry Dinosaur Polo Club via Polygon Houses and car parks pop up, unconnected, across the game’s map. Cities in Mini Motorways have a Google Maps–esque aesthetic, except the roads are missing. The game was released on mobile with Apple Arcade, Apple’s mobile gaming subscription program Mini Motorways is exclusively available on iOS devices for now, but will eventually come to Steam, too. Mini Motorways is an iteration on that, swapping train lines for roadways. Mini Motorways is developer Dinosaur Polo Club’s follow-up to Mini Metro, a strategy simulator game where players created public transit maps. ![]() The monster is me - an evil, terrible city planner who has no idea what she’s doing. Often, I imagine, it’s this: What monster designed these roads? ![]() But rather than thinking about where they’re going or what they’re doing, I think about what they’re thinking about. Pros: The decanter allows for removal of sediment that can discolour the wine and make it taste gritty, whilst the aerator softens the tannins and releases the flavours that you may not normally notice – it’s the best of both worlds. It has a double chamber to allow for a steady and even stream of air through the liquid as well as controlled wine flow. You get a plastic aerator that fits on top of your wine bottle and a crystalline glass decanter that has the capacity to hold 2 bottles of wine – perfect for dinner parties where it’s easy to go through multiple bottles. ![]() It always gets rave reviews across the board. If you want a decanter and aerator in one, then this one by Le Creuset is ideal. May have spillages if you don’t pour carefully, due to having to hold it in one hand and pour with the other. If you wanted to use a decanter to catch the sediments in your wine as well as aerating it, you can place this over the top of your decanter and pour into that, rather than pouring it into your glass.Ī warning, though – it makes a loud gurgling, sucking noise that can be very amusing at dinner parties! Everyone is totally intrigued watching it, too. It is fast and effective, adding an extra depth to the body of your wine. This aerator is simple to use, all you have to do is hold it over your empty glass and pour the wine through, into your glass. If you’re someone who hosts a dinner party, but forgets to open the wine early (as I do very often) then this is also a good gadget to have. The more dense your wine is, the more it’ll benefit from being aerated before serving, so if you’re into jammy, heavy-hitting New World reds like a Chilean Merlot or Aussie Shiraz, give it a try. Aerating your wine before you serve softens the tannins and gives it a good glug of oxygen that opens up the flavour. I did the usual ‘taste test’ and made my partner try wine straight out of the bottle, then one that had been ‘vinturied’ and the difference was striking.Īeration is a great way to enhance the natural flavours of red wine. This red wine aerator by Vinturi is the aerator we have at home. ![]()
